West Warwick, RI – A new patent-pending valve from Guill Tool and Engineering Co., Inc., the Multiflow valve, offers outstanding productivity and cost-savings benefits to manufacturers that require the extrusion of complex multi-layer tubing.
The Multiflow valve allows extruders to manufacture either three-layer or up to five-layer tubing products with the use of fewer extruders. In the three-layer configuration, the proprietary valve is designed for use with all ABA crossheads or inline dies. Using this superior technology, plastic or rubber material is fed from the “A” extruder and divided inside the manifold in order to form both the inner and outer layers of the final product.
“The obvious cost savings are considerable,” said Jim Prue, Chief Design Engineer for Guill Tool. “For example, a manufacturer is now able to make a three-layer product by using only two extruders, saving substantially on required outlays for capital equipment.”
Other advantages of this proprietary flow design valve include:
(1) The ability to change layer-wall thickness without shutting down the extruder. This compares with other common methods of varying tube wall thicknesses that require disassembling the crosshead and swapping internal flow pieces designed for each specific wall type.
(2) Eliminates “dead” areas in the manifold that would lead to degradation of the material and contamination of the tubing. This has been a widespread problem with many ordinary designs.
(3) The Guill Tool Multiflow valve allows a wide range of wall thicknesses.
(4) The Multiflow valve is designed to allow for the production of either BA or AB tubing.
Guill Tool manufactures tips, dies, and breaker plates using state-of-the-art computerized CNC machining and EDM equipment. Furthermore, engineering services using the latest CAD systems are available for custom-designed extrusion tooling product such as crossheads, tips, clamps, flanges, forming rolls, spiderless inline dies, dies, swing gates, breaker plates, special equipment and sizing dies. For over 40 years, Guill Tool has been recognized as one of the leading established designers and manufacturers of custom extrusion tooling for wire, cable, fiber optics, medical tubes, wood composites, automotive tubes, plastic compounding, custom applications, rubber, profile, industrial pipes, hose and tubes, blow molding, food and packaging. Guill Tool received ISO certification in 1995, the first major North American extrusion tooling company to meet international standards. Guill Tool provides education and training for the extrusion industry with plastic and aluminum model heads, fully illustrated operating manuals for step-by-step assembly and disassembly, training videotapes, and classes on the care and cleaning of extrusion tooling. Founded in1962 by A. Roger Guillemette, Guill Tool was first established as a job shop supplying tips, dies, crossheads and replacement parts to the wire, cable, plastic and rubber industries in New England. Eventually, Guill Tool became a supplier for the entire United States and Canada, and today enjoys a worldwide market presence.
